Submission Guidelines

The American Journal of Education (AJE) was first published in 1893 and has become a core journal in the field of education. In 2007, AJE’s managing editors began the online AJE Forum as a place for graduate students to practice public scholarship. All AJE Forum authors and reviewers must review and agree to the AJE Statement of Ethics.

Aims and Scope

The AJE Forum seeks to publish pieces that:

    • Educational policy
    • Curriculum: planned, taught, learned, hidden, null, etc.
    • Teaching and teacher education
    • Students and perspectives on learning/experiences/voice
    • Schooling and contexts for schooling
    • Philosophy, history, or sociology of education
    • Comparative and international education
  • Are structured as:
    • Scholarly opinion pieces
    • Responses to current events from a scholarly or theoretical perspective
    • Book reviews
    • Interviews with persons of interest
  • Are presented in an accessible tone and register
    • Accessibility of a newspaper op-ed
    • Grounded in scholarship and research
    • Traditional or progressive delivery platforms (podcasts, video, etc.)

Submission Preparation

Submissions to the AJE Forum must:

  • Be submitted in Microsoft Word file format.
  • Not exceed 1,500 words in length.
  • Be accompanied by a bibliography.
  • Not have been previously published or be under consideration by another publication.

Reviewer Guidelines

The AJE Forum review process seeks to uphold the ethical principles of the American Journal of Education and the criteria listed in the Forum’s aims and scope. Different review processes exist for internal/AJE Forum student editorial board member submissions and external submissions.

  • Internal Submissions:
    • We practice open reviewing in which both authors’ and reviewers’ names are disclosed. We seek to review in a collegial, supportive manner, following the AJE Forum reviewer guidelines.
    • Reviewers should complete their reviews by the deadline provided by the technical committee chair (typically within two weeks). Reviewers should communicate promptly with the chair if they are unable to review in a timely manner.
    • Though we aim to publish papers after two rounds of review (reviewed, edited by author and returned, second review, accept for publication), some papers take more edits than others or may not be published after consultation with one of the Forum’s managing editors.
  • External Submissions:

If you have any questions related to the AJE Forum’s aims and scope, please contact the AJE editorial managers at ajed@psu.edu.
